Shubh Deepawali— (Deepawali Special—25/10/2019-28/10/2019)

Diwali or Deepawali is a major Hindu festival of India. This festival is celebrated enthusiastically across various regions in the country. Diwali, also commonly known as ‘Deepawali’, is observed as the festival of lights and is celebrated by lighting lamps at homes, shops, temples, streets, etc. This festival is loved by people across age-groups and it is the best time for a family get-together.

Significance

Diwali brings happiness and prosperity in everyone’s lives. This festival is celebrated to commemorate the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after an exile of 14 years. In Maharashtra, Diwali is celebrated in different ways such as- worshipping cows and calves on Vasubaras, Dhanvantari Pujan on Dhantrayodashi. Thereafter, Abhyanga Snan and Diwali Pahat celebration on Narak Chaturdashi. Thereon, Laxmi Pujan to seek blessing from Goddess Laxmi, and Padva, as well as Bhau-Beej, are concluding festivals of the Deepawali season that celebrate the relationship between husband-wife and brother-sister respectively. Deepawali celebration comes in the “Sugi” season which is marked with good harvest and satisfaction of farmers.

Deepawali Celebrations

This festival is celebrated with great zeal by everyone in our country. Making sweet and salty preparations which are commonly known as ‘Faral’ and sharing it with others is one of the popular ways of enjoying the festival. Also, houses, shops are decorated with lights, lanterns, candles, and garlands. Rangoli is another important aspect of Deepawali celebration. Many cultural events are organized through the Deepawali-Pahat. Singing, dancing, drama, etc. are enjoyed by people. Earlier there was a trend of bursting crackers during this festival; however, increasing awareness about pollution and various health hazards related to it have reduced their usage considerably. Rather people are also looking out for green crackers or either refraining from smoke-producing ones. Deepawali is especially observed as an occasion for shopping for big assets such as electronics, vehicles, gold, etc. Shopping of clothes is a common trend among all economic classes. Bhau beej and Padva celebrations are observed by performing Aukshan of brother and husband respectively and these two days provide a great time for family reunions, love, and bonding.
